At Cisco Live this year, Panduit demonstrated its multimode optical fiber cable can perform 40GbE at 1Km using MTP connectors and 40GBASE-SR4 QSFP+ Ethernet optical modules from Avago Technologies.  Those optical modules are rated for 40GbE using OM4 fiber up to 150 meters, so the Panduit fiber has really raised the bar in multimode fiber performance.

Manufacturers such as Corning and Panduit have been making great progress with their laser-optimized multimode fibers because the multimode network equipment is significantly cheaper than the singlemode network equipment.
